With the year ending, I decided to take a note out of Chris Wojcik’s playbook and write a review. I have a tendency to focus on my shortcomings while ignoring my accomplishments, it’s something I’m working on and pushing others to do as well. A friend of mine was recently promoted to Black Belt just a few weeks ago and one of the things that I advised her was to celebrate the accomplishment. Regretfully, I did not and I really wish I had.
So, at the end of every year, I’m now going to sit down and review.

My Accomplishments:
Paid off our car a few months early.
Officially started DFM Coaching.
Started the Choke Point Chronicles.
Started doing monthly workshops at Five Peaks.
Received my First Degree on my Black Belt.
Attended a Judo Seminar at Legion AJJ.
Attended a Leg Lock Seminar taught by Chris Wojcik.
Ran the SB Strong Fundraiser to help a friend.
Put on a fundraising Kimura Workshop for Tap Cancer Out.
Appeared on Bjj Mental Models Ep 297.
Read 9 books this year, less than my goal, but still good.
Belts I Awarded:
Franco to Blue Belt.
Justin to Purple.
Goodbyes:
Unfortunately, I did have a few goodbyes. I had two students, both Connor and Dany switch gyms based on schedules and interests in other arts that we don’t have here. Goes without saying, but they are always welcome and have come by for visits.
Sadly Kim, Marko, and Dave moved away due to work. These goodbyes were harder to accept, but is are part of life. Even more so for a city like San Diego.
Some of the Books I Read:
Erasure: A Novel by Percival Everette
Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros
Chasing Darkness: Elvis Pike Book by Rober Crais
The Last Man: A Novel by Vince Flynn
Confronting Darkness by Rickson Gracie
Savage Son by Jack Carr
True Believer by Jack Carr
2025 Goals:
Workshops - I’m currently in talks with another local gym about having me guest teach periodically.
Seminars - I’d love to put on my first seminar this year. I’m hoping to be able to do two.
Remote Coaching - I’d like to expand the remote coaching that I offer. It’s been a bit harder to establish than the other services but still think I can make it work.
5am Jiu-Jitsu (Gracie La Mesa) - I want to grow this group to over twenty paying members. The time slot isn’t easy but for many people, but often the only time they can train with busy schedules.
DawnBreakers.Foundation - I’m seriously considering creating a foundation to help the underserved have access to Jiu-Jitsu.
This has been an amazing year and I know that I’m incredibly blessed to be able to do what I do. I hope that I can motivate others to take the road that I’ve been on for that past thirteen years.
