Why White Belts Matter
White Belts are often seeing as spazzy liabilities to someone’s training. At some gyms, students are often ignored until they prove themselves. Some places won’t even bother to remember your name and at others, they won’t let you roll.
The best gyms find ways to introduce White Belts into the fold safely. They have to feel like they are wanted, that they matter, and that they can contribute in some way.

Things To Consider
They Break The Algorithm - White Belts don’t understand the written and unwritten rules of Jiu-Jitsu. They don’t follow a given route and will often do stuff that you can’t quite plan form. You need this regularly in your game.
They Test Your Communication - My belief is that if you can teach kids how to do Jiu-Jitsu you can teach anyone. The same can be said about adult White Belts. Your explanations should be simple and concise whenever possible. No one should feel like they have to learn a second language to understand this new hobby.
They Reflect Your Character - If you’re someone who can be kind enough to not just be cordial to White Belts, but to be giving and supportive.. it shows an element of yourself that many people don’t have. Your ability to remember them, show them that they matter and that you care, is a massive reflection of your character as a human being.
They Represent Your Legacy - White and Blue Belts are my favorites, because they’re often forgotten about. When you can get a White Belt to become proficient early, it’s a testament to your coaching abilities. I love it when someone says.. “Oh that’s one of Dave’s.. watch out.”
They Keep Things Fresh - I love the energy that White Belts bring. They’re not jaded and their excitement for Jiu-Jitsu is so much fun to have around a program. No matter how old they are, there’s a youthful exuberance they carry that you don’t see with any of the other belts.
Closing Thoughts
Please don’t disregard the White Belts. Tend to them like your gym depends on it, because in the end, it really does. They are the life blood of gym and it’s our responsibility to do everything we can for them.
