The Stuff I Buy!
I remember early on in my Jiu-Jitsu career, I was buying the cheapest Gis and NoGi gear possible. Academy fees could be steep, and at the time my wife and I were struggling financially. These days, I’m still fragile, but I have found a happy middle ground of cost versus quality.
In writing this I decided to cover some of my favorite Gis along with some other must haves.
Gi/NoGi Gear
Tatami Elements Superlite Gi - At $85 this is probably the best Gi that I’ve ever owned. You can find it on sale from time to time. It’s incredibly light and I love the rip-stop material on the pants.
Fuji Gi - Fuji has been a staple in my closet for a few years now. I’m partial to the Suparaito Gis but those seem to be harder to come by. Fuji offers decent prices for great product.
Gracie Humaita Kingz Premium 2.0 Gi - For Gracie Humaita students, this Gi is a bit more expensive than I like to pay but it’s really well made. I love the look and feel of it in general. It’s become my classy Gi, the one I wear for seminars or when we have promotions.
Mouth Pieces
Venum Challenger Mouthguard - At $17.99 it’s a great boil and fit mouthguard. It’s comfortable, easy to set up, and if you lose it you don’t feel like you invested too much.
SISU Aero Sport Mouthguard - Just under $20, a little harder to get the fit with but if done right, the big plus side is that it’s easier to breath and speak with.
Books
The Rise and Evolution of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu - If you’re into the history of Jiu-Jitsu this is a FANTASTIC book. You should also check out his first book, Opening the Closed Guard.
Breathe: A Life In Flow - Great look into the family dynamics and the life of Rickson Gracie, the good and the bad.
Bjj White Belt Handbook - I’ll admit this is me self promoting, so forgive me. I wrote this eBook a decade ago for new students to Jiu-Jitsu.
Miscellaneous
Defense Soap Body Wipes - I’ve been using these for years and I do not leave the house without them when I train. I don’t get very many skin issues these days and I think it’s in large part to due with this.
Gold Bjj Jiu-Jitsu Backpack - Great bag with a bunch of compartments and slot that keeps your used Gis away from your clean gear.
